Homework

HOMEWORK

Homework usually starts in Week 2 or 3 of the term and go through till Week 9 or 10.  Homework will normally have the same format, but if we are studying something special or have projects in class it may alter to include other
activities e.g.. research.  Here is an idea of what homework will usually include this year.
Reading:
Most nights your child will have a reading book to bring home to share with you.  He/she may have the same journal story for the week, or sometimes they may have two different stories throughout the week.  Listen to your child’s reading and sign next to the spaces on the homework sheet.  Feel free to write a positive comment about their reading.  Your child needs to read at least 4 times to you per week to get a sticker in their homework book, (once they receive 8 stickers they get a week free of homework).  He/she does not have to read the journal story 4 times to you; it may be a picture book, a chapter book, a comic or any other type of reading material, as long as your child is reading to you at least 4 times per week.  Remember the more reading your child does the better he/she will become at reading.  Remember to also share your love of books with your wee one by taking turns sometimes to read page about!
Maths:
They will usually also have mathematical homework of some kind; it may be basic facts, a Mathletics task on the computer which can be completed at home or school or it may be a maths task to do with the topics we are learning about in class.
Spelling:
Your child will usually have spelling words to learn over a week. These words will come from either the sound and spelling patterns that they are learning for the week, or the
essential spelling list. I have included a number of ideas to help with spelling time.  Spelling will improve your child’s writing.
- Give your child  time to work out their spelling words, 5 seconds is reasonable.
-After 10 seconds encourage your child to use the following strategies when they come across an unknown word.
« Put the word into a sentence to try help them.
« “Have a go”
« “Sound it out”
« “What does it start with?”
Have fun, it is an enjoyable time together.
